Northcutt Traded to Detroit

According to John Clayton of ESPN.com, the Jaguars have traded wide receiver Dennis Northcutt to the Detroit Lions for safety Gerald Alexander.

Per the report, the Lions were unwilling to give up a draft pick.

According to Clayton, the trade terms were completed today. However, the deal won’t be official until next week when it’s ratified by league officials.

Seattle Seahawks: Running Back By Committee

New Seahawks offensive coordinator Greg Knapp recently revealed that he will use a rotation of runners in his backfield this season, according to seahawks.com

"I definitely prefer that," he said. "The game has gotten so physical. The defense has gotten so strong and so fast, it’s hard for one back to carry the load." Julius Jones, the favorite to lead the team in carries, will lose red zone work to T.J. Duckett. Change of pace back Justin Forsett will also have a role.

More In Store For Norwood??

Offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey says the Falcons will continue to use their version of the Wildcat this season, with Jerious Norwood under center, reports atlantafalcons.com.  The Falcons plan is to ease the workload on starter Michael Turner who carried the ball 377 times last season.

 

Marvin Harrison to Minnesota??

The Pioneer Press reports on the rumor that the Vikings might sign ex-Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison, 36, who is near the end of his career and has tender knees, to a one-year, low-end deal to provide competition for Sidney Rice.

Packers 1st Rounder On 2nd Team??

Green Bay first-round pick Clay Matthews has continued to run with the Packers' second-team defense during minicamps.  According to Packers.com, it's no longer looking like a guarantee that Matthews will start this year. The coaching staff has been highly impressed by Jeremy Thompson at weak outside linebacker and Matthews fell behind with an early hamstring strain.

Lions QB Battle

Lions head coach Jim Schwartz confirmed that the Lions are holding a competition for the Week 1 starting quarterback job.  "We've got a lot of talent at that position," he said. "I like the way that's stacking up." Schwartz praised Daunte Culpepper's conditioning and health, but Matthew Stafford's impressive spring seemingly has the two tied right now.

Northcutt Seeks a Trade

According to profootballtalk.com, the Jaguars have given WR Dennis Northcutt permission to seek a trade.  Owed close to $10M through 2011, the 31-year-old slot receiver/punt returner won't bring much in return. The Jags' willingness to part with Northcutt says a lot about their trust in rookies Jarett Dillard, Mike Thomas and Tiquan Underwood, all of whom have earned praise from the coaching staff during OTAs.

Chiefs Sign Mike Brown

Chiefs agreed to terms with S Mike Brown, formerly of the Bears.  The KC Star's report says Brown "could" swipe Jarrad Page or Bernard Pollard's starting job, but he's more likely to be a third safety. It's the role he's best suited for at age 31 with a long history of unreliable health.  A good pickup for the Chiefs

Ladell Betts Value

Ladell Betts is expected to be "much more involved" as a ball carrier for the Redskins this season, according to the Washington Post.  This is a yearly story, but as the Post reminds us that Betts yards per carry average has dropped in each of the past two years. 

 

Broncos Expect Big Things From Buckhalter

Josh McDaniels said the Denver staff targeted Correll Buckhalter in free agency because coaches felt he had "multidimensional" skills that would allow him to succeed in the role of a traditional running back and also in the passing game as a blocker or receiver, reports the Denver Post.   "His body is young," McDaniels said. "He just might be, as a matter of fact, I think he is, our fastest back. He's got a great burst and he's got great long speed. "To add a guy to our offense that is very unselfish and is going to accept whatever role he earns is great, and he's going to play his butt off."

Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas

To throw less and run more, the Saints need a healthy Reggie Bush, who missed six games with a knee injury. Pairing Bush and Pierre Thomas might allow the Saints to find what's been missing of late -- a 1,000-yard rusher. They released Deuce McAllister, who posted their last 1,000-yard season in 2006 while working in tandem with Bush and helping the Saints reach their first NFC Championship Game. Thomas stepped in last year and led the team with 625 rushing yards. "Pierre Thomas is a guy we have a lot of confidence in," Payton says. "He's someone that rarely takes minus-yard runs. He moves the pile. He's intelligent. He's an extremely good blocker in his blitz pickups."  From the Monroe News Star

Cedric Benson Ready??

Bengals RB Cedric Benson has looking to make his mark with the Bengals. "No doubt, I'm ready to carry this team on my back," Benson said. "I'm due, hungry for it, miss it, and excited. It's good to be on a team that wants you. It's a great opportunity for me and I am definitely going to seize every moment."

Jags O

Jaguars.com observed that "the ball hit the ground more often than a quarterback or offensive coordinator would like" during Jaguars Organized Team Activities.  The Jags are breaking in a new receiver corps, but be careful to not necessarily expect improvement from the offense's 20th overall finish in 2008. He points out that as many as seven rookies could start on offense. The key will be Maurice Jones-Drew holding up as an every-down back.

Miami's Running Game: Brown or Williams

RB Ricky Williams was "mostly invisible" on the practice field during Dolphins Organized Team Activities.  It isn't that Williams wasn't playing. He just wasn't playing well, unlike at this time last offseason. Now 32, it's quite possible that Ricky has lost a step, according to the Palm Beach Post

On the positive side, RB Ronnie Brown reportedly looked "fit, faster than ever and like he should be the team’s featured back" during Dolphins OTAs.  He also "consistently beat the defense to the outside corner," apparently regaining his 4.4 speed over a full year removed from ACL surgery.

 

Don't Draft Isaac Bruce

Santa Rosa Press Democrat beat writer Matt Maiocco expects Isaac Bruce to make the 49ers' roster, but indicates that Bruce is unlikely to start.  It is predicted that Bruce would keep his job, but Josh Morgan is probably moving to flanker to start opposite Michael Crabtree. Bruce only costs $1.48M and provides strong depth.

Will Huff Be Cut??

Is Oakland Raiders safety Michael Huff on thin ice?? 

You might remember Huff was drafted with the #7 overall spot in 2006.  He lost his starting job last season to Hiram Eugene. And it sounds like he'll be cut if he doesn’t reclaim a starting job this season, according to Pro Football Weekly.

Huff has only intercepted one career pass in three seasons.

Citing sources, Raiders owner Al Davis’ patience is wearing thin, adding that Huff “has yet to show signs of figuring things out this offseason.”

 

Giants Running Game

Giants GM Jerry Reese confirmed that Ahmad Bradshaw would be the team's starting tailback if Brandon Jacobs got hurt.  "If Jacobs goes down, Bradshaw has to step in," Reese said. Bradshaw predictably is well ahead of Danny Ware and rookie Andre Brown on the depth chart.
